The Jujube fruit tree has been cultivated in the Orient for 3,000 to 4,000 years and has only been growing in this country since late 1800 or early 1900 when the U.S. Plant Introduction Office brought it to the United States.

The "Ziziphus Jujuba", as it is called botanically, is a deciduous tree and likes hot and dry climates. It tolerates temperatures several degrees below zero and on this continent is found growing from Pennsylvania to Mexico.

The fruit is tasty, even while still partially green and snaps like an apple when bitten into. The ripe color is dark red - almost brown, and now the flavor is nearly too sweet - sort of the flavor between a coconut and a date - distinctly Jujube!

The oriental nations consider the Jujube, and the derivatives thereof, a must for their daily diet. Oriental writings claim the Jujube fruit to settle your stomach and invigorate your body.

The Orientals use the Jujube fruit to relieve throat discomfort and help with occasional sleeplessness. It supports and invigorates the digestive system. They also use the bark and roots in their diet. In the Orient the Jujube has been use to help in the relief of exhaustion, forgetfulness and mild dizziness. The leaves make a slightly bitter tea.

Hopefully the versatile Jujube is on the way to the forefront, and there has been a new interest lately in American grown Jujube.
